Intentions

So often I feel like my life may be ran by "I should" statements, rather than "I will because I want to!" sentiments. This time of year is a often clouded by a heightened sense of "for the sake of traditions," or "because it's the right thing to do" when we may not feel it in our hearts.

Are you buying dozens of presents to pass around because it's fueled by consumerism expectations, or because you saw a gift and truly thought someone would love it? Are you spending hours upon hours decorating because it brings you joy, or because the neighborhood thinks you "should" to match the rest of the houses? Are you baking cookies to bring to others out of the pure happiness it brings to share a handmade item, or because your family expects a basket of cookies upon entry into their home?

Now is the time to check in and ask yourself about your intentions. Am I agreeing to holiday tasks out of obligation or genuine desire? Chances are, you'll be more open to experiencing joy and holiday cheer in the times you're aligned in your actions with positive intentions. Helping others, holding space for yourself, and sharing joy are just a few reasons for the season.

If it's not a genuine desire or out of the right place in your heart, maybe it's time to tweak the to do list to focus more on what feels right rather than what feels like you should do.
