Holding Space for Your Loved One after They Pass

As you journey through your path of grief, you might notice that you still look for your loved one’s face in crowds, you grab your phone to call them with good news, or cook enough food for them to have a serving at a family dinner.  Perhaps we forget the grief for just a moment, and slip back into our “normal life” when we still had them with us. Being brought back to reality without them can sting, leave you feeling empty, or bring moments of loneliness.  Spending intentional time with your loved one, even after they’ve passed, can be a helpful way to remember and honor them while on your own healing journey.

This might look a little different for everyone based on the relationship you had with your loved one.  For some, this could be listening to their favorite song, watching their favorite movie, cooking their favorite meal or doing one of their favorite hobbies/activities. For others, it might be a trip to the cemetery to visit them or leave flowers for them, writing them letters or journaling memories with them, or doing an act of service for someone else in your loved one’s honor.

These moments can allow you to feel close and connected to your loved one, even after loss.  While these moments can be very personal, they can also be shared with family or trusted friends to create new memories while honoring your loved one.

Whether you’re jamming out to their favorite song or picking their favorite flowers, holding space for your loved one can be a healing part of your journey as you continue to remember and honor them.
