Healing through Unconditional Love of Pets

It’s common to feel lonely, isolated, or overwhelmed throughout grief.  While many people mean well, their offers of support might not be exactly what you need at the moment.  In these times of sadness and emptiness, animals can provide companionship, comfort, and unspoken emotional support.  These relationships with pets or animals can be a vital presence while navigating unexpected feelings and moments.

Though animal support cannot erase the loss or the pain, the animal’s unconditional love, gentleness, and loyalty can make the healing journey a little more comfortable.

One of the most important ways an animal can offer support is by being present. The nonjudgmental companionship can be a constant source of comfort when your reality feels heavy. When you don’t have the energy to show up in the capacity you wish, they offer love is one of quiet acceptance and understanding.

Additionally, throughout the challenges of grief, there is an interruption to your normal routine. Having pets around can promote a sense or normalcy and structure, and giving a continued sense of purpose while caring for them. Having tasks with a purpose such as grooming, feeding, or taking an animal for exercise can offer a positive distraction and sense of accomplishment.

In the depth of grief, it’s easy to get consumed by sadness, anxiety, or negative thoughts. Support animals can help provide a healthy distraction. A playful dog might chase after a ball, a cat might entertain you with their antics, or a bird may sing a cheerful tune. These small moments of joy can lift your spirits and provide much-needed relief from the heaviness of grief.

Animals can also bring a much-needed element of physical touch.  When we grieve, physical affection through hugging, hand holding, or sitting close to someone can bring a sense of comfort and safety.  The same is found true for people connecting with animals in the stages of grief. This can be found through petting, grooming, or sitting together.  It has been shown that interacting with pets can lower blood pressure, minimize stress, and bring comfort during difficult or uncertain times.

While grief is a very personal process, allowing moments of comfort from family or furry friends can provide comfort in a variety of ways. For many pet owners or animal lovers, companionship and loyalty can bring comfort, healing, and newfound hope in a dark time, while being reminded they  are never really alone. Through a quiet purr, a soft tail wag, or an outlet for nurturing, there is an understanding and unconditional love to bridge the gaps of healing.
