Grief is...


Grief is the raw, unexpected moments and emotions after a close friend or family member dies.


Grief is messy.

Grief is the aching, gnawing pain in your chest as the darkness creeps in and the silence echoes throughout the middle of the night.


Grief is a journey.


Grief is the remainder of love after loss.


Grief is remembering all the moments, both the good and the bad.


Grief is saying you're fine, or doing good, because explaining how you really feel would break you.


Grief is watching the same movie or tv show over and over, because it has a happy memory with your loved one tied to it.

Grief is lighting a candle to honor them on days they should be celebrating or making memories with you.


Grief is longing for your happy life back.


Grief is wondering, "Who am I anymore? I am not myself after they died."


Grief is avoiding certain aisles in the grocery store, specific stores in town, or songs on the radio, in fear of the memories or emotions they might trigger.

Grief is feeling numb.


Grief is crying into their shirt, wishing it was their shoulder you were able to lean on after a hard day.


Grief is sleepless nights, haunted by the empty bed that waits for you to climb in without someone to share it with.


Grief is the empty feeling.


Grief is an ounce of hope after the long, dark days that led you here.


As you wander down this chaotic, everchanging road of grief, your answer might change. It might be one answer in the morning, and a different answer by nighttime. Ask yourself, for you, what is grief? If you had to add to the list, what would you say? Grief is...
